Match Report | OKEHAMPTON LADIES 3rd TEAM 2 PLYMOUTH UNI 3rd TEAM 1 Oke third team and Plymouth Uni 3rd team were level on points before their game on Saturday. Earlier in the season the Uni team had beaten Oke in Plymouth so the home team were dead set on turning the tables in this encounter. From the starting whistle Oke pushed forward pressurising the Uni defence but, despite several shots on goal, Oke could not convert their possession into goals. Zoe Curtis, playing on the left wing for Oke, was quick to intercept and surge forward connecting with attacker Sandy Houston. Their efforts were only thwarted by excellent goalkeeping from the Uni team. Oke were rewarded for their determination when Jane Jones received a pass at the top of the Uni circle. Jones swiftly moved the ball on to Joey Drake who was unmarked and coolly slotted the ball round the keeper to give her team the lead. In the second half the Uni team stepped up a gear forcing Oke’s Player of the Match, Melissa Pinfield, to drop back and help defend as well as pressing forward on the right of the pitch at every opportunity. The ball was moved quickly around the pitch by both teams creating fast, exciting hockey. Oke’s midfielder Sarah Marvin worked tirelessly using her speed to intercept and cut out several Uni advances. Oke’s second goal came when Nicky Strawbridge picked up a deflection from the Uni goalie and battled her way through the defenders to find the back of the net. The Uni team then attacked with purpose forcing full backs Lois Rowlands and Anna Luxton to mark tightly and tackle strongly. The Uni cleverly moved the Oke defenders around creating an overload and their free player used this advantage to score in the corner of the Oke goal. Oke had to be disciplined in their play to keep their lead, marking the Uni players tightly and passing accurately to keep possession. Oke’s controlled play paid off to give them the win they deserved. Next week Oke play away against Penzance 2nd team |
