Match Report

This was a game of two halves with Teign dominant in the first half and Okehampton the team looking the more likely to win in the second half.

Columbines started well with joint player of the match, Eleanor Marvin, making several penetrating runs with the ball down the left wing and linking up well with forward, Sarah Bazeley, to put pressure on the Teign defence.  The home side scored a sublime early goal with Eleanor moving the ball quickly from the left where it found Maddie Davidson on the right wing who powered into the circle and crossed it for co-player of the match, Izzy Rowlands, who was in the perfect position to bundle the ball over the line.

Teiqn equalised soon after and the zip went out of Okehampton’s play.   The defence of Sandy Houston, Hannah Woodhams, Lois Rowlands and Jennie Humphry were being penned back and were having to work hard to keep the Teign attack at bay but the team was relying more and more on Carol Newcombe in goal to come to the rescue.  Despite some committed last ditch defending from Sandy and Jennie, two penalties were awarded against Okehampton in quick succession which were converted into goals to give Teign a comfortable lead.

The second half was a complete turnaround with a spirited performance from the Okehampton players.  Jennie and Sarah Marvin took control of the midfield and Hannah and Lois were pushing up and thwarting the Teign attack before it gained momentum.  Sandy was using her strong hit outs to advantage and Sophie Tripp, Sarah Bazeley and Izzy were busy chasing down the ball and harrying Teign into mistakes.  Eventually Okehampton were awarded a penalty corner from which Viv Weatherington scored to give them hope they could get something out of the game.  It was all Okehampton now and again it was positive passing play from Eleanor and Izzy on the left that set up Sophie whose cracking strike found the corner of the net for the deserved equaliser.
