Match Report | Okehampton 1sts – 18 Honiton hornets - 0
It was a lovely warm sunny day on 23rd February when Okehampton Ladies 1st XI hockey team travelled to Ottery St Mary to take on Honiton Hornets. The Oke ladies were a bit worried about the sunny warm weather being used to Dartmoor drizzle but triumphantly pulled through to the most of impressive victories. Daisy Morgan, the Oke goalkeeper, was unexpectedly busy during the first few minutes and her quick responses denied the Hornets a goal. The Okehampton Ladies then started to acclimatise to the heat and a spectacular breakaway by Lucy Wiseman followed by a cracking shot provided Okehampton’s first goal of many.
Well-practised drills at training lead to a truly wonderful ‘J-run’ by Nicky Pedrick. She dribbled from the right defence up to the Hornets backline, passing the ball accurately to Nicky Strawbridge who was waiting dangerously at the penalty spot, giving Oke Ladies a 2-0 advantage. She went on to score an impressive additional five goals.
Oke forwards Rochelle Woolacott and Zoe Curtis had a blinding game, scoring two goals apiece, working together and supporting each other at all times. Whilst Man of the Match, Emily Rowlands, had boundless energy taking on the Hornets fearlessly and scored an impressive three goals.
Any threats coming from the Hornet’s right wingers were put out immediately by Hannah Whitely and her crunching tackles. She also scored another of Okehampton’s goals. Midfielders Elly Jenkins and Hannah Gibbons had a great passing game at the centre of the field and scored three goals between them.
Captain, Sophie Whitely, was an inspiring example with strong tackles and caused disruption with her winding runs. Laura Parsons, defender extraordinaire, was determined as ever to score a goal but was miraculously denied on three occasions by the Hornets goalkeeper.
Despite feeling a bit under the weather Amanda Sim was, as ever, a solid defender giving all teammates ahead the confidence to attack.
The final score of 18-0 was an impressive show of goal-scoring prowess and maintains Okehampton’s position at the top of the table.
Next week the first team are at home hosting Ashmoor at 2pm
