Okehampton 2’s hosted Duchy 3’s at the College on Saturday in a fixture that was set to be a tough test for the young Okehampton side. The game started with both sides sharing spells of possession. The midfield duo of Morgan Jr and Morgan Sr helped to control the tempo, creating space for the forwards to advance. Okehampton’s defence worked to nullify Duchy’s fast attacks, with goalkeeper Goulding being forced to make several saves. As the half continued, Okehampton began to grow in confidence, with Westlake and Luxton challenging the Duchy’s defence only to be beaten by the keeper who made some excellent saves. The best chance squandered by Ash, hitting the post, despite eliminating the goalkeeper. The first half ended 0-0; the home side knew they would have to be more clinical in the second half to secure the points.
The game restarted and Okehampton began to mount pressure onto the tiring Duchy side. An error in the Duchy defence produced Okehampton’s first penalty corner of the game. To Okehampton’s delight Luxton’s neat flick opened the scoring from an extreme angle. Duchy were now chasing the game, but Oke worked hard to pin them back into their own half. A loose ball pounced upon by Luxton found Jones in space, who calmly wrong footed the keeper to double the score. Hungry for more, Okehampton continued to mount their attacks, and TJ Priday found Jones on the edge of the D, once again he calmly dribbled the ball passed the goalkeeper and tapped in to make the score three. The final whistle sounded and Oke were delighted with their victory.
